Lyrics:
Boys Of Summer
Don Henley.
Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer’s out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I’m drivin’ by your house
Though I know you’re not at home

But I can see you
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream
Now I don’t understand what happened to our love
But babe, I’m gonna get you back
I’m gonna show you what I’m made of

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
I see you walkin’ real slow and you’re smilin’ at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today, I saw a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, “Don’t look back. You can never look back.”
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone.

The lead single from Henley’s album Building the Perfect Beast, “The Boys of Summer” was released on October 26, 1984 and reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US as well as No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart and number 12 in the UK Singles Chart.

The song’s music video won several awards. “The Boys of Summer” was also performed live by Henley with the reunited Eagles; such a version is included on the group’s 2005 Farewell 1 Tour – Live from Melbourne DVD.

Composition and history.

According to Mike Campbell, he wrote the music while working on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Southern Accents album in 1984: upon hearing it, Petty said that while he liked it, he felt that it wouldn’t fit into the album’s “flow”. Subsequently Jimmy Iovinecalled Campbell and told him that Henley was looking for material: after asking for Petty’s blessing, Campbell gave the song to Henley, who wrote the lyrics.

Henley’s song is cemented by Campbell’s 1-7-5 repetitive riff over a vi-IV-V-IV chord pattern. Superficially, the song appears to be about the passing of youth and entering middle age, with the theme of ‘summer love’ apparent in the choruses, and of reminiscence of a past relationship.

“The Boys of Summer” is written in the key of Eb minor.

In a 1987 interview with Rolling Stone, Henley explained that the song is more about aging and questioning the pasta recurring theme in Henley’s lyrics (cf. “The End of the Innocence”,and “Taking You Home”.

In an interview with NME in 1985, Henley explained the ‘Deadhead” sticker on a Cadillac’ lyrics as an example of his generation selling out:

“I was driving down the San Diego Freeway and got passed by a $21,000 Cadillac Seville, the status symbol of the Right-wing upper-middle-class American bourgeoisie – all the guys with the blue blazers with the crests and the grey pants – and there was this Grateful Dead ‘Deadhead’ bumper sticker on it!”

  1. I believe "wistful" describes the feelings this song stirs in me, and I suspect many people. That feeling of remembering those summers back when you were young and without responsibilities and how you didn't really know enough to appreciate it all back then the way you can now.

  2. You have to hear Courtney Hadwin's cover of this song when she was 10, it looks like this but much better in my opinion, it doesn't have video, only her voice, and it sounds amazing, more energy, I like it so much.

  3. Mainstream (chart topping) music of the last decades in a nutshell:
    2010s*** = This is garbage
2000s** = Mostly garbage with a few exceptions
1990s* = Out of the one half that wasn't techno (not music), maybe half of it was okay
1980s = Wow, at least 80% was amazing
*=second half of the 90s: Max Martin's career is taking off; **=2004: Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald joint him; 2010s: Most of the mainstream music is being written by Martin and/or Gottwald
    Do you see the problem?

  4. What song. In downtrodden Ireland in the 80s, all eyes were on USA with their money, power, fantasy way of living that would make us dream..mostly thanks to 80s soaked music and videos like this and tv shows like miami vice, knight rider dallas etc..perfect escapism.
